We have been learning about Australian currency and unpacking what makes up $1. Children have discovered how to create $1 in multiple ways using many different coins. They have used this understanding when thinking about dollars and what a credit card and debit card actually mean.
We split up into families of four (groups) and went shopping to make our dinner for the night. Each family only had $30 to spend and it was their job to work collaboratively to create a shopping list for a meal they would make to feed themselves. Each group had a current supermarket catalogue to purchase their goods from. There were some very interesting dishes being created but most families managed to budget their money and buy all their supplies. The children thoroughly enjoyed using their math skills in a real life situation. They began to develop an understanding of how little and how much you can purchase with $30.
