EAL

Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School is a richly diverse multicultural school with families from all over the globe. Many students in our school are learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL). Learners of EAL are students whose first language is a language other than Standard Australian English and who may require additional support to assist them in developing English language proficiency. At Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School we endeavour to celebrate our cultural diversity and wish to support our EAL learners with a variety of support programs. We offer specialised teachers and support staff and employ best educational practices within the classrooms. For some EAL students school is the only place that they speak English and we encourage families to continue to develop their first language at home as this is a valuable skill. At school we will support students in building their vocabulary and English literacy skills throughout all areas of learning. Children may require some individual and group support that explicitly addresses English language needs. We use a range of authentic evidenced based assessments and take into account the developmental continuum of EAL language proficiency.
